# Post classroom messages and replies

To post in a classroom channel, type your message and press Enter. Messages do not need titles. On a phone, use the send button because Enter adds a new line.

## Write and send a message

Choose the channel before typing. On a computer, press **Shift+Enter** when you need a new line within the same message, then press **Enter** to send it. This is useful for instructions with several steps or an example followed by a question.

Messages appear instantly, and the conversation updates live for everyone every few seconds. Students can follow along in the channel while you explain the next task. Keep each instruction clear enough to understand when someone reads it after class.

## Share code and links

Put code between opening and closing triple backticks to show it as a code block. The block has a **Copy** button, so students can copy the example without selecting each line.

Links are allowed in classrooms. Add a short explanation beside a link so students know what to open and how it relates to the exercise. For reusable class prompts, use [the prompts channel](/help/articles/share-class-prompts).

## Reply in a thread

Use **Reply in thread** on a message to open the thread panel. Continue the follow-up there so the answer stays with the original message. For a student's question, make clear which step your reply addresses.

Unread dots mark channels with new messages and sync across devices. Use them to find conversations to check when you return to the classroom or switch devices.

Read [Moderate classroom messages](/help/articles/moderate-classroom-messages) for pinning and deletion controls.
